December 6, 2011: Feast of St. Nicholas.
Pictured are some of the kids of Korogocho, visiting the 'mzungu' who is having a
support meeting with their mothers, aunts and sisters.
Just finishing a busy weekend visiting the local bars in Korogocho with "Uncle" Wainaina
in search of men who would prefer to chose life no matter how difficult it may be-----
over the slow gradual death of a life of continued, heavy drinking of rot gut booze.
There is a beauty in all of these men that has been spoiled by too many frustrations and too
few opportunities. You have to be blunt in dealing with these guys because they are 'graduate
school' level abusers---no one beer and I'm done for these guys. The questions for discussion
last Friday: "Most people consider drunkards to be useless people; do you consider yourself
to be useless? Most men who drink heavily over a long period of time lose all self-respect.
When we first started 'discussing' these questions, there was alot of shouting, name callling
and protests that they were not useless men---and we agree. Eventually at the end of the
hour the 25 or so men and women in the 'den' were quiet, paying attention, and thinking
about possibilities in life they hadn't thought of in a long time.
It is a tragedy to see the beauty of a human life be so distorted and hopeless. I hope we
continue to befriend some of these guys and awaken in them a belief in a better life.
